The past few weeks I’ve been working on some exciting developments for Swindon and the country. As I’m sure you’re aware the government recently took steps to secure British Steel in the UK, by passing emergency legislation to intervene in Scunthorpe. British Steel is not only important as an asset to the UK it is incredibly important for Swindon. Why? Because we are home to one of the largest pieces of industrial land in the UK, the Panattoni site.
When I took office last year, there were no occupants lined up to attend the site, it was just a large piece of land without a use. Now, I am working alongside the Council to ensure we generate high quality jobs in the Town. Industrial partners I’ve spoken too are keen to invest in Swindon, because of our prime location and incredibly skilled workforce. The move the government took to take over British Steel have reconfirmed to many in the Defence industry, but not just limited to them, that the UK is a nation committed to self-reliance and industrial growth. Without British Steel, every industrial site throughout the UK becomes less popular and harder to run because we lose our ability to generate a key strategic resource in country.
That’s why I’m pleased that the government have committed to protecting this vital resource, not only so the country can continue to generate our own steel, that we can now use in further industrial projects across the UK, but that this action will have a direct positive impact on Swindon and our ability to attract investment. Along with the Heart of Swindon Plan, the Panattoni site will offer a new chance for Swindon to reinvent itself, first we were the home of the railways, then a leading car manufacturer, and now, as long as I, the Council and fellow Swindon MP’s do our part our future is incredibly bright.
