Since being elected as an MP so much has happened and I’m glad to say I’m finally finding my feet both in Westminster and here in the Constituency. I’m a Swindon man to the core and so whilst I’m focussed on bringing national change, supporting the Labour government and voting on key issues like rebuilding the NHS, nationalising the railways and assisted dying I am dedicated to championing and improving the place I’ve always called home. To that end, I’d like to cover a few of the things I’ve worked on in Parliament as well as some plans for Swindon.
One of the most momentous decisions I’ve made so far came in the vote for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. After months of consultation with constituents, lawyers, faith groups, and campaigners on all sides, as well as running a survey to get the views of the people of Swindon North I voted in favour of the Bill. It passed it’s Second Reading 330 – 275. This is not the end for the Bill however and it will now undergo months of scrutiny to ensure the safeguards in the Bill are the right ones and practical, keep people safe throughout a terribly difficult decision for anyone to make. I will continue to take part in this debate and represent the views of the people of Swindon North.
More than this, I’ve been able to support the ‘White Ribbon’ campaign and write about the importance of positive role models for men in our society. I recently spoke in a debate about violence against women and girls where I paid particular attention to figures like Andrew Tate who peddle in toxicity and aggression. I know not all men are toxic and the phrase toxic masculinity often makes people uncomfortable but to me it’s important to call out that behaviour and note we’ve lost a sense of cordiality and kindness in our society. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the state of our politics both nationally and locally.
I’ll write about this in greater detail in the future as it’s a cause close to my heart but it brings me to some of the constituency work I’d like to champion as the term progresses. Whilst I have met with many businesses and charities locally as well as hosting my weekly surgeries, I would like to ensure my time in office has a positive and tangible effect on the people of Swindon North. To that end my focus is on securing more investment for the town, working with business to create more apprenticeships and provide opportunities for the people of Swindon. I also plan on establishing a mental health hub. Similar to my concerns over a lost gentleman-like attitude, the prevalence of mental health issues among men, especially but not limited to men living in the most deprived areas is a key focus of mine and something I hope to address across the next few years.
There will be much to write about over the parliamentary term and I look forward to airing some of my thoughts whether on major political reform or local issues and hope you’ll join me and engage with me throughout that time, sharing your views and in doing so make me a better and more representative MP.
